Arsenal’s Premier League title challenge was already on life support before Manchester City won 11 straight league games, and it is now all but over.

At the Emirates Stadium, Brighton outplayed the Gunners and prevailed 3-0 on the strength of goals from Julio Enciso, Deniz Undav, and Pervis Estupinan. Roberto De Zerbi’s tactical ideas in the English top division were on full show as Brighton’s buildup and pressing of Arsenal put the Gunners in precarious circumstances.

Brighton, who stifled Arsenal both in and out of possession, deservedly won. The Gunners did have a few opportunities, most notably when Leandro Trossard struck the crossbar, but other from that, they did not contribute much up front.

Arsenal also had trouble handling Brighton’s aggressiveness, particularly when Gabriel Martinelli left the game after being hurt by a strong Moises Caicedo challenge in the first 20 minutes. The game’s ferocity seemed to catch referee Andy Madley off guard, and his hesitation to issue early cautions favoured Brighton.

Arsenal currently sits four points behind the leaders after Man City’s rout of Everton earlier in the day, and with one game left to play, City can mathematically clinch the title with a victory over Everton.May 21 in Chelsea.
