On Friday night, NBA Free Agency began, with a number of well-known players signing new contracts and contract extensions. Desmond Bane, a former star player for TCU, was one of those guys. According to several sources, Bane and the Memphis Grizzlies have agreed to a five-year, $207 million deal extension. It’s the richest contract ever signed by a basketball player for the Horned Frogs and one of the biggest contracts purportedly reached during the current free-agent signing season. During the 2022–23 season, Bane had a fantastic start to his career, averaging 21.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 4.7 assists.

Over the course of his three-year NBA career, Bane has developed into a reliable shooter for the Grizzlies and one of the best in the league, averaging 46.9 percent from the field, 42.5 percent from 3-point range, and 88.5 percent from the foul line. Bane also becomes the first Grizzlies player to sign a contract for more over $200 million. The 25-year-old will remain a member of the team’s youthful core, which also features Jaren Jackson Jr., a big, and Ja Morant, a point guard who has been suspended for 25 games for behaviour that was harmful to the league. Bane was chosen in the first round of the 2020 NBA Draught with the 30th overall choice.

Over the course of each of Bane’s first three seasons in the league, his scoring average has considerably increased. The former TCU star’s position has expanded over the last two seasons as he has improved his all-around game and become more of a go-to scorer on the offensive end. Bane was mostly a three-and-D role player during his rookie season. Memphis has made the playoffs each of the previous three years with Bane on the roster, making it as far as the Western Conference Semifinals in 2021–2022. The Memphis Grizzlies, who received the No. 2 seed this season, lost to the No. 7 seeded Los Angeles Lakers in the opening round of the playoffs.
