First came the “305,” then came the “786.” Beginning this summer, Miami-Dade County will have a new area code, “645”.

An all-services area code overlay has been authorised for Miami-Dade County and a section of Monroe County, according to the Florida Public Service Commission.

A new area code is added to an existing area code as an overlay. This would entail that when a new service or new line is purchased, new mobile clients residing in Miami, Doral, the Florida Keys, Fontainebleau, Hialeah, Homestead, Kendall, and other smaller cities will receive a new number.

Initially, Florida’s whole state only had the 305 area code.

The 305 area code for Miami-Dade received the 786 exchange in 1998.

Beginning on August 4, 2023, South Floridians will start to hear the “645” area code.
